My Plan
In 2016, I graduated from Fairview High School. Currently, I am sophomore at Penn State Behrend in Erie, PA. I have decided to major in Finance with a minor in either Economics or Accounting. I chose Finance because it is a practical choice for major that will provide many opportunities in the business field. The business world has always interested me, and I also really enjoy problem-solving. Math and Economics were my favorite subject in high school so Finance seemed to be a good mix of the two subjects.
I did some research while I was in high school while I was still deciding which major I wanted to pursue, but not a lot. I knew I wanted to choose a business major but I never fully decided. The majority of the information that I found discussed the wide variety of jobs that could be done with a Finance major. I liked the flexibility that a Finance major would give me; the opportunity to be able to do many different jobs. Also, job security is important to me and Finance seemed to be a stable and growing area of work. With a Finance degree, there are many jobs that I could have. There are Financial Analysts, Financial Advisors, Financial Planners, Budget Analyst, Actuaries, and many others (Profita). Having many options with the degree is very important to me. The salary for these jobs is anywhere from $55,000-$70,000 (Investopedia). The best companies to work for as a finance majors are Capital One Financial, Fidelity National Financial, New York Life Insurance, and at number one, American Express (Loudenback)
Some of the necessary skills of a finance major are the ability to effectively communicate and to handle stress, have an attention to detail, be able to problem-solve, make decisions, and also have a vast knowledge of financial laws and regulations, "tax structures, financial instruments, and economic theory" (Doyle). Along with these skills, there are also other technical and computer skills needed. For the majority of jobs, a "proficiency in... Microsoft Office..., particularly Excel," is necessary as well as some knowledge in SAP, QuickBooks, and Simply Accounting among other programs (Knapp).
I definitely still want to pursue a Finance Major. Not only do the jobs that come with a Finance Major pay well, but there are also a wide variety of places where I could work. I really enjoy problem-solving, math, working with computers, and economics so I think that a Finance Major fits well with my career and life goals. Doyle, Alison. “Applying for a Job in Finance?
